Anchorage's Public Transportation People Mover bus system started its operations on July 1, 1974, carrying thirty nine thousand five hundred five passengers in their first month of operational service. In the year 2005, it made three million nine hundred seventy five thousand seventy four trips having an average weekday ridership of thirteen thousand four hundred ninety eight.

Anchorage People Mover maintains a fleet of fifty five, comfortable, modern, fully accessible and clean buses that travel over two million miles a year. They serve the greater Anchorage area with fifteen regular routes and four DART routes. Every day more than twelve thousand Anchorage and Eagle commuters ride the Anchorage People Mover.

The department also offers a number of transportation programs such as:

AnchorRides which is a complementary shared ride for people with disabilities and seniors to prevent them from using fixed route. The contractor which is AnchorRides is a transportation service provider to people eligible for the Medicaid and Community Based Waiver program.

Anchorage Share-A-Ride which coordinates commuter Vanpools and offers free carpool matching services. Carpooling is an option for people who are into cutting down their commuter costs while enjoying a more relaxing commute to and from the office. Ideal clients of this program are those who don't need their cars at work and have a consistent work schedule; however carpooling can be as flexible as you need it to be. This Anchorage People Mover program gives the convenience of saving your money as well as reducing stress of your commute by sharing a ride.

Free Travel Training is also another transportation program to groups and individuals on the bus. This Anchorage People Mover program offers travel training that is free personalized and one-to-one instruction or group orientations sessions for senior citizens and people with disabilities who want to learn to ride the People Mover buses.

These Anchorage People Mover programs have been beneficial to a lot of those people with disabilities and senior citizens giving them the chance to function as part of the community.

Bus Fares and Passes of Anchorage People Mover Buses:
One Way Cash Fare is a fare that is good for one continuous trip to end of route and an additional fare will be needed to continue travel.
Adults $1.75
Youth (5-18 yrs) $1.00
UAA, APU students -free
Children 4 yrs and under -free
Senior Adults, disabled, Medicare card holders - $.50

Tokens have no cash value and cannot be use to buy a day pass, these tokens are available at Transit Centers and The Bus Stop Grocery.
Adult $35.00 20/roll
Youth $20.00 20/roll

Day Passes are valid for unlimited rides on day of use. They are sold on the bus for the day of purchase with the exact change. They may also be purchased in advance from various outlets.
Adult and Youth $4.00
Reduced $1.25 (for seniors and people with disabilities must show Reduce Fare ID card)

Other passes for the Anchorage People Mover Buses are monthly passes, annual passes, and other passes such as U Pass, Class Pass, and Employer Sponsored Pass.
