Abaco Bahamas

Abaco Bahamas: The World's Sailing Capital

Someplace along this long stretch of 120-mile uninhabited beaches and cays, lies a private spot perfect for some good book and chilled champagne. The Bahamas is home to wonderful destinations for holidaymakers and one of the highly coveted spots is the Abaco Bahamas.

The bustling center of Abaco, which is the Marsh Harbour as well as Treasure Cay give a vast range of small-scale, family-run business villas and hotels. The nightlife is speckled and there are plentiful restaurants. The Treasure Cay, the Marsh Harbour and outlying cays are situated with picture-perfect quaint villages and jewel-stoned white houses.

Compared to the neighboring islands like Nassau, Exuma and Eleuthera, the Abaco Bahamas remained the vastly unexplored archipelago until the later part of the 18th century, as the non-Indian inhabitants started to increase. The first residents arrived during the 1700's. The islanders of today are mostly British Loyalty successors who escaped the America after the England's lost in the revolutionary war. The accents of inhabitants of Abaco Bahamas still chime of England and they are very pleasant to hear.

The island has a superb barrier reef that protects several stretches of fantastic white-sand beaches and turquoise clear waters filled with dolphins and fishes. To the western part of Abaco Bahamas Island is the Hope Harbour town conquered by striped lighthouses, created by the British Imperial Lighthouse Service in the year 1863.

The Abaco Bahamas village, situated amidst a harbor and a stunning beach has possibly 300 permanent dwellers and is evocative of a fishing village of New England rested in the tropical area. The main street of this island is the Queen's Highway, which is an 8-feet wide, with no cars permitted passing along. The two town village docks are available for a harbor where gasoline can be bought. The village has also its own bank, liquor store, hardware store, drug store and several artist studios and gift shops.

Upon your visit, do not miss the freshly made Bahamian bread and the lime pie. Fresh fish can also be purchased at their fish market. The Man-O-War Cay, which was named after a bird, has been depending on shipbuilding for living. Some handmade boats have been handed over for generations.

Highly named as the sailing center of the globe, Abaco Bahamas is consists of Little Abaco, Great Abaco and several surrounding islands sprinkled around 120 miles. The village is situated on the north most section of the island of Bahamas and is considered the next largest island.
