Bahamas history: Prosperous and Textured

Like most of the islands in the Caribbean, the Bahamas, originated from "baja mar", a Spanish phrase for shallow sea, envelops a long record of the past, which embraces several of the events and themes determinedly found in the chronicles of neighboring nations in the area.

The archipelago, which is composed of a settlement of hundreds of cays and islands, has a complex Bahamas history weighted by diverse groups of indigenous people, English settlers, nearby Americans and Spanish explorers. Unfortunately, the Bahamas history also takes in unsettling topics like slavery and piracy.

Colonialism and European exploration were important issues in the island chain's history. The indigenous people from near Cuba resided on the Bahamas islands during the fourth AD century. A lot believed that the original cultural group that has lived in the island hailed from the South America. Eventually, in the coming of 10th century the Caribs, Arawaks group of people and the Lucayans reached the coral-laden Bahamas Island. This part of the Bahamas history became significant for the Lucayans because this is the period where they started honing their skills in agricultural and crafts, apparently building a civilization.

The attempts of the Europeans to find a western route to India shattered the life of the peaceful Lucayans. It also caused a devastating consequence of the first inhabitants of the island. Christopher Columbus also contributed a significant part of the Bahamas history when he landed off in Western Hemisphere of the island.

The English settlers who sought religious freedom during the period 1600s also settled in the archipelago. Like most of the English colonizers who initially settled the United States and its nearby islands, the starting years were described by hunger and fighting.

Due to its complex geography of cays and islands, part of the Bahamas history was the coming of pirates during the 17th to 18th century. Famous pirates who have lived include the Black beard, Edward Teach. They used Nassau as their ground during this era and revenging Spanish forces burned up the resolution many times the entire piracy period.

The America also made a significant contribution to the Bahamas history, influencing over the island during the late part of 18th century. The Bahamas had a flourishing economy, bringing jobs and bases. The island swiftly became a popular destination for vacationers.

The Bahamas became a nation in 1969 and achieved full independence on the 10th of Jul1 1973.
