Christmas In Barbados

Christmas in Barbados

Christmas is one of the many occasions that is celebrated all over the world. Each country and culture has its own way making the celebration memorable and exciting, and most of all truly its own. The celebration of Christmas for instance mirrors the society that a certain country has.

Christmas is always alive and the spirit of giving of sharing always fills the air. Its long time colonizer, the British, has largely influenced the celebration of Christmas in Barbados. Though there is no snow, Christmas in Barbados is never without the sight of Santa Claus and his reindeers.

Christmas in Barbados is very well depicted in the Christmas poem of Ian Clayton. While other countries that are experiencing winter can have a white and cold Christmas, the Barbadians do it on their own style. In fact Christmas in Barbados is one that has a Caribbean flavor. Christmas songs are inspired with soca music with congos drums, while Santa Claus is the black version and is drinking rum. For the Barbadians, Christmas will always be hot.

Their tables are filled with their own pride of delectable dishes like fish balls, perhaps the flying fish with lots of spices, pepperpot, egg glazed with hot sauce, liver cutters, the famous Baxters bread, and the roti hot curry. Other food items are the yams, all sorts of okra dishes, stuffed turkey, jug-jug, and eddoes. Most of all, the celebration will never be complete without the cou-cou, Barbados national food of all.

While the people in the Northern Hemisphere are donning thick clothes because of the freezing winter, Christmas in Barbados is totally unique because the people including the tourists are enjoying the sand, sea, and the sun. Giving the tourists a truly awesome way of celebrating Christmas, the Bajan way.

Christmas celebration in Barbados is not exempt from all the pomp and pageantry. Before the first day of December draws near, Bajans are busy decorating their homes with locally produced Christmas furnishings. During the middle of the month of December, people go out of the street to witness one of the biggest spectacles in the island. Adorned trucks with Christmas lights and decors parade the main thoroughfares the capital city of Bridgetown and the nearby areas. Hundreds of Bajans, mostly children await from the parade route to witness the elegantly decorated floats with Santa Claus and Frosty the Snowman. Cartoon characters are also some of the sights to watch that never go without distributing little gifts to kids.

Barbadians have truly made their own way of celebrating Christmas remarkable especially to those who will experience it for the first time. Tourist will really enjoy Christmas in Barbados minus the biting cold of winter.
