BERMUDA SHOPPING 2

BERMUDA SHOPPING

Whoever said that shopping is not a form of exercise hasn't really been shopping much. There are actually more to Bermuda than diving and a game of golf. Bermuda shopping is but one of the most important things to do while visiting. It is a "showcase of the British empire". And why not? Bermuda shopping will let you see the variety of goods from Great Britain and Ireland, among others. Here, you can find cashmere sweaters galore, tweed jackets, woolen goods, and guess what -- fine china and crystal as well.

If you're the type who shop at Rodeo or at Saks Fifth Avenue, designer merchandise in Bermuda will not raise your eyebrows an inch. Even if Bermuda shopping means a 20% off on what U.S. prices are, a Gucci bag will still cost a lot. But then, why would you want to buy it if it's downright cheap, right? Anyway, the low prices that Bermuda shopping was so famous for is not exactly as they used to be. Import tariffs drove shops to raise their prices as well. You might think of going window-shopping first, or comparison shopping. Sometimes though, that is not entirely the best idea. If you see something you like and think the price is reasonable, buy it. Bermuda shopping will make you aware that most of the prices are fixed all over the island. This means that a charming piece of jewelry in a shop in St. George will most likely cost the same in a shop in the City of Hamilton.

Bermuda shopping is most evident along the streets in the City of Hamilton. This is where the best shops can be found. The atmosphere here is relaxed and casual, and merchandise is aplenty. It is always a good idea to bring cash while on a Bermuda shopping spree. While most shops accept Visa and MasterCard, the famous U.S. card -- Discover Card is not honored anywhere.

Liquor is said to be the essence of Bermuda shopping as it offers the largest savings. American citizens are only allowed a liter to bring back home. Otherwise, additional liters would be subjected to taxes, which still would cost pretty much less than they would back home.

Tobacco is a favorite Bermuda shopping item too. Americans are not allowed to bring back these Cuban cigars, but that does not stop them from buying. They could always huff and puff elsewhere.

If you feel that you did not do enough Bermuda shopping, lighten up. The international airport in Bermuda has duty-free shops to cater to those last-minute shopping. So if you haven't loaded up on your favorite Chardonnay, you could still do so just before you board the flight. Indulge!
