University of Copenhagen

Does everyone have the right to an education, or are some people privileged enough to have it?

Denmark is proud of its knowledge society. Due to the fact that the population's majority has high knowledge level, the country's workforce generates a very appealing business environment. The country's unemployment rate, as well as its inflation rate, are low. It maintains its position in the knowledge economy of the world.

Established in 1479, the University of Copenhagen is the first and the biggest university as well as research institution in Denmark. It is made up of close to 33,000 students and over 6,000 employees. The University of Copenhagen's campuses are spread out within and around the city. Recorded as Scandinavia's second oldest university, it also beats two other universities in Denmark for the "most prestigious university" title, the other two being the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Aarhus.

When the University of Copenhagen was founded, it was the centre of theological study of the Roman Catholic religion. But back then, it already offered other studies such as medicine, philosophy, and law. In 1537, when Martin Luther reorganized, the university was converted into a Lutheran seminary. A lot of restructuring and changes happened from then on, which have all contributed to what the university is today.

Currently, the University of Copenhagen is home to six faculties, namely: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, and Faculty of Health Sciences.

The Faculty of Law of the University of Copenhagen consists of four departments. Each one aims to prepare its students for both the Bachelor of Law degree as well as the professional law degree.

Among the six faculties of the University of Copenhagen, the Faculty of Theology is the most nominal. It is composed of three departments, plus the Centre for African Studies.

The University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Science is composed of the natural and mathematical sciences, and is grouped according to 11 institutes which include the Natural History Museum of Denmark.

The university's Faculty of Social Sciences has five departments of which learnings are based on different fields, namely: Political, International Politics, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, Psychology, and Management.

The biggest faculty based on its student count, the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Copenhagen involves 22 departments and other disciplinary centers covering several subjects.

The Faculty of Health Sciences has ten departments, each geared towards the theoretical parts of teaching and research.

The University of Copenhagen is part of the country's tuition-less education system. This candidly shows the world that education is indeed a right.
