Whoa Nessie! Discovering the Mystery of Loch Ness

There are many mysteries surrounding the Loch Ness and the Loch Ness monster, also called “Nessie”. Many people are firm believers in the existence of Nessie and make searching for evidence of the monster a passionate past time. Others are simply intrigued by the mystery surrounding this giant, or giants, and want to learn more. Whatever you believe, you can be certain that a vacation of Nessie searching will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.

The Loch Ness is a very large freshwater lake (called a loch in Scotland) in the Scottish Highlands. This lake extends 23 miles southwest of Inverness, Scotland. There are many attractions to the surrounding areas and places to stay, such as the Urquhart Castle. This area draws a large number of visitors every year and most come to see the famed lake and the castles. Most of these visitors are curious about Nessie and hope to catch a glimpse of a hump, tail or head surfacing above the deep waters.

It is true that there are many mysteries surrounding Nessie and her home. Over the years, many people have claimed to see Nessie swimming through the water. Some believe that she might actually be a group of creatures. The monster is most commonly described as sleek, dark in color, usually with two humps, a long tail and very similar in appearance to a whale. Along with Bigfoot and the Yeti, Nessie is one of the most mysterious creatures on Earth. There is even some evidence that there many be a large network of underwater caves, caverns and corridors where these quiet creatures reside when they don't want to be seen by humans.

Is there real evidence to support the existence of Nessie? Some say yes. Underwater photos and the use of high-tech sono equipment have all been used in Loch Ness. Many photographs were taken from under the water and although images were hard to see because of the murky waters, a creature did appear. Close up photos of a creature's diamond shaped fins were recorded. What the creature is still remains a mystery. There are an equal number of people that say no. They believe that Nessie is simply a hoax and that the lake is certainly not large enough to support such large creatures.

If you are interested in Nessie, why not book a vacation and find out for yourself? If you are in Scotland or visiting England, you can plan to spend a day or two visiting Loch Ness and the surrounding areas. In fact, there are many tour companies that offer package deals to Loch Ness. There are also many cottages and cabins that are available for rental right on the famed lake.

Before setting out on your own hunt for the Loch Ness monster, you can find many locals that are willing to give you information and tours of the area. Do some research before you go so you can know where to go and where to look once you arrive. Make sure you bring along your camera and video camera. You never know when Nessie might decide to make an appearance. If you want to explore the area on your own, you will be able to find many maps and information about the Scottish lake before you arrive. There are many books that are dedicated to the sole purpose of finding evidence of the Loch Ness monster.

A good guide will share with you the history of the lake and the mystery surrounding Nessie. Bring a pair of binoculars and get ready to look out. When you are in the area, make sure you visit the Loch Ness Monster Museum. This museum is dedicated to providing you with photographic evidence and shows a short film that explores the myth of the monster and the neighboring Urquhart Castle.

There are one and two-day tours of Loch Ness and many travelers say that both are very informative and worth the trip. Most Loch Ness cruises take travelers around the outside perimeters of the lake. You might even come away feeling that you have just seen Nessie making an appearance. If you have two days to spend, you should try and book one of these tours. Many travel agencies can help you fit a tour into your schedule while you are on your vacation to Scotland.
