Flights To Fiji

The main gateway of all flights to Fiji, the Nadi International Airport (NIA) serves about more than a million people in an annual basis. Located on the western coast of Viti Levu, this terminal is the main quarters of Air Pacific, the official carrier of the island nation. On the east of NIA is Nausori Airport, very popular among visitors with business dealings in mind who head to Suva which is thirty kilometers away.

History
The building of the first- ever airstrips in Nadi International Airport was taken care by New Zealand in 1939. The finance came from the colonial authorities of Great Britain and were utilized by the American Airforce when a battle erupted in 1941. Right after the war, the management of NIA was transferred on December 20, 1946. A year after, the Civil Aviation Authority launched its operations which included looking over all the flights to Fiji. By 1970, the government of the island nation joined in organizing the terminal and gained full control in 1979.

Looking back at the past, flights to Fiji were only important as a stop to refuel. The apron was covered with trees such as crotons, hibiscus and palms. The paths were still of whitewashed stone but today, when you land at the Nadi International Airport (NIA), everything is concrete. The area has even expanded which can already accommodate huge planes that come from foreign lands. Before NIA was called as such, its old name was the Colony of Fiji: Nadi Airport.
