The Grand Canyon south rim is the most visited area in the canyon. For those enthralled with arid settings the south rim mostly offers a desert environment. A south rim adventure is an endurance test where visitors will find themselves contending with the heat and exhaustion, especially during summer. The south rim has an elevation of 7,000 feet (2,134 meters) above sea level – the hike is definitely not a walk in the park.

Water supply comes from the Roaring Springs located in the intersection of Roaring Springs Canyons on the north rim and Bright Angel. Water is distributed through pipelines from the Roaring Springs pumping station, to Bright Angel Canyon, crossing the Colorado River, and to the elevated Indian Gardens. From here, water is pumped upwards to the south rim.

Visitors can expect to see no surface water on the south rim except for a few springs. The flora and fauna in the Grand Canyon south rim have learned to adapt to this condition since millions of years ago. Trees growing in the south rim have adapted to store any amount of water that reaches their roots like the Pinyon Pine or the Utah Juniper. Conifers and groves of Douglas Fir are scattered in the expanse of the south rim. A population of cacti, yucca and agave plants also grow on the south rim.

Animals apt in a desert climate can be seen in the Grand Canyon south rim like the mule deer, ravens, rock and golden-mantled ground squirrels, pinyon jays, and some bighorn sheep.

The Grand Canyon south rim is open all days of the year including holidays. Transportation is not a problem but reservations are required for campers and lodgers. Visitors during the day can anticipate congested traffic and parking space problems especially during the peak season, usually in summer. Winter is least crowded but the cold weather is a major concern for travelers.

The Grand Canyon National Park Lodges conducts the bus tours within the park. Shuttle buses can be available after a reservation is made 48 hours earlier. Going on wheelchair might be a problem since it is inaccessible in shuttles. Other essential amenities and facilities for visitors are available on the Grand Canyon south rim.
