Or there are others who are looking way ahead into the future and are buying properties in Greece so they can later rent or lease these out to other people.

Undeniably though, buying properties in Greece can be very confusing to foreigners. However, with a great understanding of the process, the requirements, and the general rules, the experience can be a good one actually.

Foreigners are allowed to purchase properties in almost all parts of Greece. But for those who are not from any European Union nation, and the properties belong to the border areas, a permit is required from the local prefecture. Buying properties in Greece requires transactions in Euros. Thus, buyers need to set up an account in Greek banks for attorney's fees, paying bills, and money transfers. A Greek tax number should also be acquired from local tax offices.

It is advisable to get an English-speaking lawyer. The British Consul can provide you with a list of good lawyers. The buyer's lawyer and the seller's lawyer are independently paid by each of them, and should both be present during the contract signing, as necessitated by Greek law. A civil engineer or a surveyor is also needed to ensure that the property does not have any deficiency or that the real details are in accordance with those contained in the title.

Owning properties in Greece or elsewhere requires meticulous planning and preparation. Money may be the most essential factor but it is definitely not the only one. You have to be "hands-on" in the purchase even if you have lawyers and real estate agents to do things for you. After all, you don't want to spend for a mansion and end up with a shanty, right?
