London International Airport

London International Airport

If you easily get lost in crowds, be prepared to experience it another time when you are at the London Heathrow Airport. As the world' third busiest airport, this London international airport will definitely give you the ultimate challenges that airports are known for.

Often called Heathrow, the London Heathrow Airport is also U.K.'s busiest and the one which provides the best connections. This London international airport is also Europe's largest.

Heathrow started as the Great Western Aerodrome during the 1930's. Fairey Aviation used to privately-own Heathrow, and utilized it mainly for testing. The name "Heathrow" was taken from the hamlet that was destroyed to accommodate the airport. Croydon Airport served as London's main airport as commercial traffic was unable at Heathrow.

Heathrow did not just turn into a London international airport overnight. In fact, it only has its first commercial flight on May 31, 1946. It grew over the years, and in 1947 it was serviced by three runways, and had three others being built. These runways, built specifically for airplanes with piston engines, were designed short and criss-crossing in order to handle all types of wind conditions. The modern runway had its first slab ceremonially positioned in 1953 by Queen Elizabeth II. She was also the one who officially opened Heathrow's first-ever terminal building in 1955. Soon, the Oceanic Terminal simultaneously started its operations together with the helicopter service.

Over the years, travel to and from this London international airport was made easier when the Underground was extended to reach Heathrow in 1977. The railway then was able to connect The London international airport to Central London in less than one hour.

Today, this hectic London international airport is home to four terminals and one cargo terminal. Heathrow was granted permission for another passenger terminal in 2001, and its construction is currently ongoing. Project completion is projected to be in 2008, while that of the satellite building are said to be in 2011.

Heathrow has its share of critics. In fact, it earned the vote as the worst airport in the world, according to a TripAdvisor survey involving 4,000 participants. Despite all criticisms, Heathrow still manage to offer some of the best known airport services. Food and beverages are offered by restaurants, coffee shops, and various fast food chains. Shopping, currency exchange, and postal facilities are also conveniently within this London international airport.

Each one of us always has an airport story to tell. And whether your experience at Heathrow is unpleasant or not, you can't ignore the fact that it strives hard to let you have the best travel story.
