The Rio Grande

Home to diverse groups of Native Americans, New Mexico has at least 19 inhabited pueblos or Indian villages with some of them having been continuously inhabited for thousands of years. When the first Spanish conquistadores arrived here, they had trouble penetrating this inhospitable land. They had to use the Rio Grande Valley, beginning in El Paso del Note now known as El Paso Texas, they followed the valley, conquering Indians and establishing colonies along the way. Old Route 66

The Old Route 66, the "mother road," no longer exists, but you can still see remnants of this old road when you follow Route 25 that bisects the state from north to south, entering through the northern mountains at the Colorado border before joining the Rio Grande Valley and follows it south to El Paso. Bisecting the state from east to west from Texas to Arizona, Route 40 also offers a taste of the original path of Route 66.
