Niagara Falls People Mover System

You may have questions as to what is a Niagara Falls people mover system and what is its use. Actually, since 1985, the Niagara Parks Commission has operated a rubber tire based people mover during the peak tourist season. This system, which is commonly known as Niagara Parks Commission People Mover, operates along the Niagara Parkway/River Road between the Rapidsview Station and Queenston Heights Park.

The existing Niagara Falls people mover vehicles are ideal to service areas where grades do not pose any problem and speed and time variations are not critical to service. However, these vehicles are not best suited to provide service for the Primary Tourist Area in Niagara Falls. And so, this leads to the Niagara Falls People Mover Feasibility Study where it is identified that there are number of significant economic and environmental benefits which will accrue to the majority of the community resulting from the development of the proposed Niagara Falls people mover system.

To give you a clearer picture, the people mover project is a proposed transportation project to link attractions of the Niagara Parks Commission within Queen Victoria Park below the escarpment with tourism attractions in the City above the escarpment. The existing Niagara Parks Commission people Mover System, which only runs in Queen Victoria Park, is more than 22 years old and should need improvements to provide better transportation, primarily for the tourists and employees of tourism, thus, enhancing economic viability of the tourism industry in order to protect and create jobs.

Equally important is the need to provide traffic and congestion improvements, which most would agree, presently creates problems during the peak tourism season. A proposed new system would run on a dedicated right-of-way avoiding conflicts and traffic. In addition, by trying to get the people out of cars and into public transportation, it can reduce emission and conserve energy.

The Niagara Falls People Mover Project was approved by City Council as an integral part in the City's official plan. The inclusion of an improved transportation system as one of the components for future growth and development was and still is one of the main aspects of a rational tourism development strategy linking the city to the Park. The solution of transportation problems in anticipation of growth is an important planning strategy and infrastructure endeavor in any community looking forward. If this project is done, the tourism in Niagara Falls will be changed. It gives a lot of benefits to the community and improves more the Niagara Falls tourism industry.

The Niagara Falls People Mover serves as a major transportation linkage which allows more than five million riders to access the Casino/Gateway Project and other attractions in a safe, efficient and convenient way. An attraction in its own right, the Niagara Falls people mover brings significant tourism benefits to the city and will become one of the internationally recognized symbols of Niagara Falls.
