Travel Spain

So you have decided to travel Spain. You're excited; you can hardly wait for the day to arrive when you can throw in the towel, so to speak, grab your bags, and leave for the airport.

Whoa, hold your horses!

Have you found out all that you need to know about Spain? Are you certain you have everything you need to travel Spain?

Here are some things you might have forgotten about, as well as some tips to get you back on your feet in case you run into a bit of trouble. Consider them as just small precautionary measures to take before you leave. After all, it doesn't hurt to be a little prepared when you travel Spain, or any other country for that matter.

Entry Requirements

Citizens of the European Union and countries such as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein have little in the way of entry requirements. All you need is your Identification Card, or a valid passport. If you are traveling with a minor, you will also be required to present, in addition to the minor's ID card, a document that shows parental authorization.

Healthcare and Safety

There is a certain advantage to travel Spain if you are a member or citizen of the European Union. Aside from the relatively lax entry requirements, you will also receive free medical and hospital care. Just make sure you bring with you your European Health Card (EHC) when you travel Spain. Note this emergency call number: 112. You can ring this for free whichever part of Spain you might be in case of an emergency.

Driving

Again, if you travel Spain and you are a citizen of the European Union or such countries as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, the requirements are straightforward. You need your valid driver's license, the same one you use when driving in your own country.

If you are from another country not enumerated above, you will need an International driver's license. The legal age for driving is 18 years old, but if you want to rent a vehicle, you must be at least 21.

Travel Spain with a Pet

It is allowed, but before you can enter Spain, there will be a series of health and identification requirements that must be complied with. The requirements vary according to which country you come from. In any case, your pet must be vaccinated against rabies. Identification is done with a microchip or a tattoo. Pets that are less than three months old are not allowed to accompany you when you travel Spain.

Currency

Since January of 2002, the official currency in Spain, as in most other countries of the European Union, is the euro. One euro consists of 100 cents. There are eight coins in denominations of 1, 2, 3, 10, 20, and 50 cents, 1 euro and 2 euros. Notes are denominated into: 5s, 10s, 20s, 50s, 100s, 200s, and 500s.
