Best Places to Eat in Tahiti

You're in the South Pacific on the Isle of Tahiti, but you're craving some French Mediterranean fare. Where do you find a restaurant that specializes in food that originates half a world away? One restaurant called the Casablanca Cocktail Restaurant can accommodate you with that craving.

Whether you want some good ole couscous or the heartier grilled rib-eye steak, aka, "Cowboy," you're sure to find something at this Tahitian restaurant that says French Mediterranean. Be sure and try the fun, shrimp in a banana and curry sauce.

The menu is in written in French, after all Tahiti is part of the "French" Polynesian archipelagos, but no need to fear your lack of understanding of the romance language. The staff will help you make heads or tails of the le carte.

What's great about this restaurant too, is that it is a favorite with local Tahitians. And the view of the yachts moored in Marina Taina makes for additional aesthetically pleasing dining experience. Top the view off with the live music played on the weekends that pull the locals in from all over Tahiti and you have one of the best restaurants on Tahiti to help you mingle with the locals.

O.K., you're wondering if while you're in Tahiti you can get the always popular Italian food the world is in love with. Gotcha covered there, too. L'Api'zzeria's, located in a wonderful grove of trees just across from the waterfront, at Bd. Pomare, between rue du Chef Teriirooterai and rue l'Arthémise, is strictly Italian through and through.

Be sure to get one of the tables outside under the trees rather than inside. The dining experience is that much better under those trees. As for the food, the best pizza on Tahiti is served here, ever since 1968. The pizzas are cooked in a wood-fired oven. Great steaks are cooked in that same wood-fired oven, too. All of the other traditional Italian fare is served, too, spaghetti, lasagna, fettuccine, veal in whit or Marsala wine sauce, and grilled homemade Italian sausage.

What about a nice, quick little breakfast place? L'Oasis du Vaima located on the southwest corner of the Centre Vaima, Rue du Général-de-Gaulle at rue Jeanne d'Arc (at the corner of Centre Vaima, opposite Cathédrale de l'Immaculée Conception) will get you served up quick without sacrificing one but of quality. They offer breakfast quiches and great little French pastries. Add to that a great cup of strong French coffee, and you're ready for the day's adventure.

Be sure to stop by in the afternoon after trekking around Tahiti if you are nearby and if you like ice-cream of milkshakes. And while the place is more-or-less a kiosk, that doesn't stop them from serving up two different plats-du-jour, of plates of the day, and perfectly crispy casse-croutes for you to enjoy under a covered dining terrace or an air-conditioned dining room upstairs. L'Oasis du Vaima opens up everday but Sunday at 5 am and closes at 5 pm. Sorry this great little spot in Tahiti is closed on Sundays.
