The Yosemite Sentinel Dome

Have you heard about the Sentinel Dome in Yosemite? You probably have seen it in pictures, or in person. Well, the Yosemite Sentinel Dome is actually one of the most well-known areas of interest in Yosemite region. It is known throughout the state of California as one of the highest peaks in the state, and perhaps what's nice to know about this attraction is that it is not only perfect for the adventurous pros. The Sentinel Dome can be reached and enjoyed even by the amateurs as well.

The Yosemite Sentinel Dome is basically a dome made of granite. It lies on the south wall of the Yosemite Valley, approximately 1.4 miles from the northeastern part of the Profile Cliff and 0.8 mile southwest of the Glacier Point, another notable formation in Yosemite.

According to numerous resources, the Yosemite Sentinel Dome was first named as Sakkaduch by the Native Americans who happened to be the first inhabitants of the Yosemite region. The original name was changed into "South Dome" by the Bunnell Survey, and years later, another survey came out naming the place "Sentinel Dome" simply for the reason that this granite formation appears like a watch-tower.

What's interesting to know about the Yosemite Sentinel Dome is that it offers the best views of the night sky. Also, you'll get to see the entire Yosemite Valley and its surroundings when you're on top. The other well-known attractions in the region, such as the Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, El Capitan, Basket Dome, and North Dome are even accessible in sight. The area can give you a 360-degree view of these attractions, making it truly inviting.

The Yosemite Sentinel Dome is also best known for its Jeffrey Pine, which grew and stands on its peak. According to several claims, the pine is by far one of the most interesting things to see in Yosemite Sentinel Dome for the reason that it has been photographed and mentioned in books and travelogues by the earliest visitors. Several reports have in fact revealed that the Jeffrey Pine in Yosemite Sentinel Dome was first photographed by a person named Carleton Watkins as early as 1867. That time, the tree was still on its perfect form; it died during the drought in 1976. But despite that fact, the Jeffrey Pine still remained standing at the top of the Yosemite Sentinel Dome until August 2003.

The Yosemite Sentinel Dome can now easily be reached by visitors through the hiking trails available around. The trails will actually bring you to the base of the structure after a 2.2 mile roundtrip hike. The trailhead is actually located 6 miles from the Glacier Point and Bridalveil Creek road. Once you're at the foot of this structure, you have the chance to cross the granite slope until you make your way to the top of the Yosemite Sentinel Dome.
